Brookgreen Gardens is a national historic landmark in the heart of South Carolina’s lowcountry that exceptionally blends four mission areas in botanical gardens, art, history, and the environment.
The Lowcountry Zoo has been important element of the mission of Brookgreen Gardens since its inception and has achieved top standards for animal care, education, wildlife conservation and science. It is one of 5 institutions accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in South Carolina.
Animal Keepers at Brookgreen Gardens are responsible for the daily care of our zoo animals, including but not limited to feeding, cleaning animals and their habitats, greeting and educating guest and participating in the animal enrichment program.
Examples of duties:
Prepares diets feeding procedures: documents qualities, orders feed and other supplies as directed.
Takes daily inventories of the animal collections, provides daily assessments of the health, welfare, and behavior of the animals.
Participates in capturing, restraining, and moving animals, administering medication and supplements as directed.
Cleans and maintains exhibit areas and the adjacent public areas.
Participates in the animal enrichment program.
Give guest presentations as directed.

Education and Pre-requisites

Minimum Qualifications:
Two years paid experience in a zoological, wildlife sanctuary, or related institution.
Experience working with Bears and Wolves desired.
Experience in an AZA accredited zoo preferred.
Associates in Biology or related field preferred.
Knowledge of animals’ native to the Southeastern U.S.,
Ability to work within a independently and within a team environment.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing,
Valid South Carolina Driver’s License Required.
Applicant should be physically able to perform the duties required in a zoo environment and be able to work outdoors in all types of weather. 

Compensation and benefits

Full time position–hourly.
