Description

Job Summary: To provide routine care to a collection of animal species, including feeding, watering, cleaning, containment, enrichment, evaluation of health status, and exhibit maintenance.

Animal String: Sumatran orangutan, chimpanzee, colobus monkey, maned wolf, scimitar oyrx.

Major Job Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
• Will prepare animal diets as prescribed and deliver daily diets to assigned species. Will provide fresh water daily and/or maintain water delivery systems.
• Will maintain ponds or pools in animal exhibits. Will clean and maintain indoor and outdoor animal exhibit areas on a daily basis or as determined by Head Keeper.
• Will ensure animal containment at all times by performing daily and regular inspections of assigned area to ensure animal containment and keeper safety. All safety or exhibit concerns will be reported to the Head Keeper.
• Will maintain an accurate and informative daily record of animal care and behavior. Will observe and monitor the health status of each individual animal on a daily basis.
• Will provide appropriate species-specific enrichment to assigned species. This may include diet presentation, construction and provision of enrichment devices, and alteration to existing exhibit. Will provide behavioral training to assigned species.
• Responsible for becoming familiar with the husbandry guidelines for assigned species. Becomes knowledgeable for assigned species’ behaviors, including breeding, socialization, parenting, etc
• Assists in the capture and restraint of animals.
• Will perform minor maintenance on buildings, yards, and surrounding areas. This may include watering, pulling weeds, replacing light bulbs, painting, etc. Additional maintenance or landscape concerns will be reported to the Head Keeper as work order to the Maintenance or Landscape departments.
• Will do daily checks on vehicles and equipment and report any concerns to the appropriate departments.
• Will present Keeper Talks to the public as assigned and provide public education at animal exhibits as such situations arise. Will present a friendly, courteous, and helpful demeanor to all guests at all times.
• May be required to use private vehicle on occasion.

Necessary Skills:
• Must have strong people skills.
• Must be a team player.
• Must be skilled at public speaking.
• Must be well organized and able to function independently.
• Must be able to lift 70 pounds.
• Animal experience is preferred.
• Must be capable of working in all weather.

Education and Pre-requisites

Great ape experience preferred. Enrichment building skills a plus.
