Description

Do you want to be a part of a unique zoological foundation that combines elements of a zoo, animal adoption, nutrition, animal rehabilitation, birthday parties, conditioning, community outreach, classes, habitat enrichment, conservation and fun? Then The Bunny Hutch Boutique and CLIMATES-Rescue is the place for you! We follow the highest of standards outlined by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), American Association of Zookeepers (AAZK), Association of Zoo and Aquarium Docents and Volunteers (AZADV), World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), International Marine Animal Trainers Association (IMATA) and more.

DUTIES:
• Prepare and distribute diets to the animals.
• Clean and disinfect cages, crates, and animal areas.
• Handle certain animals when necessary and appropriate.
• Must follow the all husbandry animal handling guidelines.
• Ensure that adequate inventory of food and supplies are maintained; restock items, and advise staff when low.
• Document feeding of animals and cleaning of cages.
• Clean up at end of shift, including washing dishes and utensils, sweeping, wiping down counters, and putting laundry into baskets.
• Advise Animal Care Staff of any problems or concerns with the animals.

Education and Pre-requisites

• Must commit to work a minimum of two (2) four- (4) hour shift a week for 4 months.
• Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Must be able to kneel, bend, squat and reach, also lift 50lbs and drag 100lbs.
• Willing to work in old clothes, get dirty, cold, hot, muddy, sweaty or smelly at times.
• Willing to work with chemicals (bleach, mild detergents, abrasives), fresh and salt water, latex/nitrile gloves (allergies are taken into consideration and alternatives may be used).
• Strong interest in wildlife or natural history. Prefer related degree or college credits but not required.
• Previous animal handling experience preferred (any species).
• Pre-exposure rabies shots preferred
• Due to the liability of working with animals, we cannot accept anyone looking to fulfill court-ordered community service hours.

Compensation and benefits

The entry level program is unpaid. There are limited paid internships for those who have completed our entry level program each semester. If you need credits for school, we are able to work with them to make sure you get internship credit. We already have relationships with internship departments at ODU, CNU, VWU, and many local high schools.
