Description

Chehaw Park & Zoo and Flint RiverQuarium are looking for a motivated professional to join our animal care team. We are enrolled in AZA’s Pathway towards Membership pilot program and are committed to ensuring high standards of animal care and positive guest experience.

This role is responsible for the daily preparation of animal diets including all related duties such as cleaning, quality control, and supply acquisition. The ideal candidate must maintain effective communication with coworkers and supervisors, be able to multi-task and absorb change, maintain a high level of consistently accurate kitchen skills, and be able to focus for extended periods. Maintaining OSHA and USDA standards is paramount.

BASIC JOB DUTIES
• Accurately prepare animal diets in accordance with diet menu specifications
• Inventory food items and other commissary supplies; coordinate deliveries or pickups
• Drive a facility vehicle and trailer for the purpose of retrieving and/or delivering food, hay, and other supplies
• Responsible for maintaining clean and sanitary conditions of food preparation areas
• Safely utilize disinfectants, detergents, and other chemicals as needed to clean and sanitize supplies
• Safely operate various types of equipment in the performance of duties
• Maintain familiarity with current AZA, HACCP, USDA, and OSHA guidelines
• Ensure proper food storage procedures are followed
• Maintain live feeder animal colonies to enhance dietary variety
• Record relevant information in facility’s recordkeeping database
Perform routine repairs and maintenance in work areas as needed
• Support animal enrichment, training, and browse programs with associated dietary input

Education and Pre-requisites

• High school diploma or equivalent
• 1+ years of previous experience and/or training involving food preparation and food safety
• Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation to/from work
• Adequate knowledge about safe food handling, quality control, and kitchen equipment; ability to build upon this knowledge and to adapt as necessary to animal collection changes
• Basic computer skills
• Must be able to lift 60 pounds, including hay bales, and work in all weather conditions on a daily basis; must be able to tolerate strong odors, dust, hay, dander, and dampness; must be able to remain on feet for extended periods of time; may be required to stand or sit for extended periods of time and/or to twist, bend, crouch, squat, climb, crawl, kneel, jump, swim, or carry objects for short distances; may be exposed to chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, moving mechanical parts, vehicles, and potentially dangerous animals
• All job offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation and drug test

Compensation and benefits

Full-time (40-hours per week), hourly

Pay: $24000 – 26000 per year

Relocation package available to eligible new hires.

The Albany Metropolitan area includes welcoming cities such as Leesburg, Putney, Sylvester, and Sasser. These cities boast cost-of-living numbers much lower than the national average and are all within easy commute of Flint RiverQuarium and Chehaw Park & Zoo.
