Description

The Oregon Zoo is currently recruiting for an Animal Curator to manage our Primate department as we prepare to open our newly constructed chimpanzee habitat, Primate Forest. We will soon be ready to welcome new animals to join our four resident chimpanzees. This Animal Curator will lead our team through those introductions, and will be responsible for managing the team’s animal care programs, including husbandry, staff supervision and training, animal behavior training, and ongoing evaluation of animal care and wellbeing. The successful candidate also will oversee other animal programs at the zoo, working closely with the General Curator and another Animal Curator to distribute animal management duties according to all our curators’ experience, skills and interests.

Education and Pre-requisites

• Bachelor’s degree in zoology, biology or a related field, AND
• Four years progressively responsible experience in the care of great apes; AND
• Experience managing chimpanzee introductions; OR
• Any combination of experience and education that provides the necessary skills, knowledge and ability to perform assigned tasks.

Additional requirements:
• This position requires a valid driver’s license and the ability to be insured under Metro’s insurance policy.
• Medical testing and/or immunizations may be required as the duties of this position require close contact with animal areas and enclosures where animals may be present

Preferred qualifications
• Experience managing animal care staff in an accredited institution with demonstrated ability to build teams and encourage collaboration
