Description
B Bryan Preserve in Point Arena, CA is looking for a qualified, committed, and enthusiastic person to join our team caring for a variety of African hoof stock including Nubian Giraffe, all 3 species of zebra, Greater Kudu, Sable, Roan, Black Wildebeest, Bontebok and a charismatic Cape Buffalo.
We are a privately owned AZA Certified related facility providing excellent care in a dedicated, fun, team-oriented atmosphere. You will be responsible for the day-to-day animal care including cleaning, feeding, enrichment and training. Our training focus currently is a variety of medical procedures, hoof work and participation in various research projects.
This candidate will have the opportunity to learn and help assist during vet procedures including blood draws, injections, and hoof care as well as neonate checkups for newborns.
You will also deliver our conservation message to visitors on tours on a regular basis.
Daily duties include:
• Maintains and cleans enclosures
• Prepares, regulates, and distributes food, loads, and unloads foodstuffs, cuts browse on and off grounds and provides enrichment
• Conducts visitor tours in our vintage Land Rovers
• Establishes and maintains computer records ZIMS and daily keeper notes
• Observes behavior of animals in both a day to day and long-term basis, notes any unusual behaviors, signs of illness or injury, breeding behavior, etc., updates Animal Welfare Studies and Quality of Life analyses
• Duties:
o Animal Husbandry – 40%
o Training – 25%
o Leading tours – 20%
o Assist in animal care – 10%
o Recordkeeping – 5%
Education and Pre-requisites
Experience Requirements:
• At least 3 years paid experience in the care of captive hoof stock in a zoo type environment
• Must be a team player who takes initiative, is a self-starter and can work independently
• Good physical condition with the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. and move a minimum of 120 lbs.
• Valid drivers license and clean driving record
• Willingness to work outside normal business hours including weekends and holidays
• Good written and verbal communications skills. Able to deliver our conservation message for groups up to 30
• Best practices of working with hoof stock and reading behaviors
• Some farrier experience a plus
Compensation and benefits
• This is a 40 hour per week position.
• Pay is $18/hour or DOE.
