Description

The Animal Care Professional is considered an entry-level position and is responsible for completing assigned daily animal care tasks as directed and trained by Animal Care Specialists. This position may occasionally be responsible for overseeing Animal Care Aides, Interns, and volunteers.

Essential Duties, Skills & Responsibilities
• Responsible for assigned daily husbandry routines and ability to cross train as needed (Areas include Pasture, Giraffe/Rhino Barn, Ambassador Animal Program).
• Ability to lift fifty-five (55) pounds unassisted, navigate uneven ground, bend over, drive and ride in off-road vehicles, work in all weather conditions including extreme temperatures, etc. as the job requires.
• Regular and dependable attendance.
• Effective communication with Supervisor regarding professional and animal-related needs.
• Effective listening and accountability skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Assist Specialists and Veterinary team with preventative and emergency care tactics.
• Assist various GSCP teams as needed.
• Willing to guide and engage tour groups for animal-related programs as needed.
• Sound decision making and ability to adapt as situations arise.
• Work scheduled weekends, holidays, variable work weeks as needed.
• Collaborate with the AC team to create a safe, positive, compassionate, and healthy work environment.
• Inclusive mindset.
• First Aid certification or willingness to obtain it (training provided)

Education and Pre-requisites

• Degree in Biology, Zoology, or related field OR 1+ years experience
• Livestock, small mammal, and/or reptile handling experience
• Ability to utilize various programs such as Microsoft Office Suite.
• Detail and observation oriented with a strong affinity for up to date and accurate record keeping.
• Ability to inspire colleagues, guests, and volunteers.
• Ability to live within a 45-minute commute of the Park.
• Motivation to continuously grow within the position and the field; Continuing Education opportunities will be made available. (Relevant workshops, conferences, webinars, etc. will be considered).
• Ability to operate Kawasaki Mules, Golf Carts, assorted tour vehicles, etc. Heavy machinery experience is a plus (tractor, skid-steer, etc.), training available.
• Collaboration in collection planning inclusive of educational, conservation, and management needs.

Physical and Medical Requirements:
• Must be capable of standing, walking, or sitting for long periods of time (approximately 100% of their assigned shift); ability to climb stairs, bend, and stoop during the execution of duties.
• No significant uncorrected impairment of visual or auditory ability.
• Ability to lift and carry a weight up to fifty-five (55) pounds.
• No allergies related to plants or animals that would interfere with the ability to work.
• Ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments and in all weather conditions.
Additional Requirements:
• Successful completion of a post-offer background check, including criminal and driving records.
• Employees will be employed for a ninety (90) day probationary period.
