Description

Barn Hill Preserve is a zoo in Ethel, LA, just north of Baton Rouge. Barn Hill Preserve first opened in 2012, with the goal of educating students about wildlife and conservation. From there, our goals evolved and in 2015 the gates of our zoological park opened for the first time for guests! We have stuck to our original model in the years since of educational encounter tours. Each year we add new exhibits and animals. We are currently working towards ZAA accreditation and hope to achieve this within the year!

Our mission is as follows:

We are home to over 150 animals across a variety of taxa. We are seeking a dynamic animal care manager that is comfortable working with all species of animals.

The Animal Care Manager is responsible for the cleaning, feeding, and medical care of the animals, as well as training and supervising the caregivers, interns, and volunteers, delegating daily responsibilities to the animal care staff, leading health checks, and many other tasks.

The duties of the manager include, but are not limited to:

Manage and mentor a team of keepers
Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive protocols for animal care, keeper safety, and equipment maintenance in the animal exhibits and associated facilities and service areas.
Lead the management and evaluation of our enrichment programs, focusing on enhancing animal welfare. Utilize expertise to develop, document, and assess enrichment plans in alignment with USDA standards. Provide guidance and training to staff members, ensuring their proficiency in implementing approved enrichment plans and maintaining compliance.
Assess the needs of the animal collection and take proactive measures to meet those needs by initiating food orders and work orders for repairs, renovations, and maintenance of exhibits, facilities, and systems.
Ensure sufficient inventory of supplies, equipment, and animal foods to support the operation of the department
Responsible for coordinating the medical care needed for the animal collection following the instructions of the veterinary staff.
Ensure the welfare of the animals under our care by diligently following procedures for assessment and documentation.
Maintain accurate and detailed daily records to track the well-being and progress of the animals.
Weekly scheduling of staff
Conduct annual evaluations and provide support to staff members in goal setting, fostering their professional growth and development.
Perform related tasks and duties as assigned.

Education and Pre-requisites

-Minimum 2 years experience in a professional animal care position required
-Bachelor’s degree preferred

Pay Range: $18-$22/hour
