The Animal Ambassador department at Audubon Zoo is seeking applicants to fill our 2019 internship positions.

Internship Overview:

This internship provides an exciting and unique opportunity to gain hands on experience with our collection of Animal Ambassadors at Audubon Zoo. Interns will work with over 50 species including small hoofstock, small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. All the ambassador animals are used for a variety of programming both on and off grounds. Interns will have the opportunity to assist in on grounds programming.

Interns will gain valuable skills and knowledge while working with our experienced Animal Ambassador team. They will learns many aspects of animal care including general husbandry, nutrition, exhibit maintenance, behavioral management and public presentations. We are a close-knit team looking to teach and mentor those who are interested in working in this rewarding profession and who are eager to share their own passion for wildlife and conservation with our guests.

Time Commitment:

Internships are unpaid positions and require at least 32 hours a week for a minimum of 12 weeks. A strong passion for educating our guests about wildlife in a fun and friendly manner is a must.

Working Conditions/Requirements:

This internship includes manual labor and work in all weather conditions (e.g. heat, humidity, rain). Applicants must have current proof of a negative TB test. No housing is provided.

Qualifications:

Must be at least 18 years old and must demonstrate an interest in animal care and public education. Previous animal care experience and/or coursework in a related field is preferred.

Must be comfortable with all the physical challenges that come along with the position, including but not limited to: walking/standing for extended periods of time, lifting and carrying heavy objects (up to 50lbs), climbing stairs and ladders, kneeling, scrubbing, raking, etc.

Must be able to follow both written and verbal instructions and effectively communicate with staff and volunteers.
