Description
The goal of this internship is to learn and successfully perform (under supervision) the duties and responsibilities of a Zoo employee in the Children’s Zoo. Experience will include:
• leading the public education programs which will include: Red Panda talk, Livestock Stampede, Hatchery Tour, Prairie Dog and Meerkat Talk, and Barnyard Encounters.
• coordinating the section’s involvement with the Talk on the Wild Side youth interpreters
• overseeing management of the volunteer programs: recruitment, orientation, work scheduling, training, daily supervision.
• assisting keeper staff with animal care husbandry, diet and veterinary care of the large and diverse animal collection within the Children’s Zoo
• assisting facility maintenance and exhibit renovation
• assisting with facility horticulture
• using intern training and experience to design special projects (interns, for example, have developed a new interpretive program for Nature Trail, re-wrote several handouts for guests and the self-guided tour booklet for teachers)
• assisting staff with animal enrichment and training programs
• supporting facility management and administration
Qualifications: College level coursework in biology, zoology, ecology, or related area; ability to present information to groups; and career interest working with animals. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Environment: Includes working outdoors; physical work requires lifting up to 50 lbs and working with dust, hay, and animal hair/dander.
