Education and Pre-requisites

The Animal Care Manager performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects the Zoological Society’s mission and vision of connecting people to wildlife and conservation. Will be responsible for and oversee all aspects of the safe care and handling of an assigned animal collection and contributes to collection planning.

Essential functions:

-Manages and evaluates the performance of assigned Animal Care Supervisors and keepers
-Reviews, develops and updates related departmental policies, procedures and programs
-Assures that Society policies and procedures are adhere to
This position requires at least 3 or more years of supervisory experience. Selected candidate must be able to provide programmatic support, guidance and training to Animal Care Supervisors and their staffs. Skills to facilitate effective performance of departmental supervisory and keeper personnel and assure that Animal Care Supervisors are trained to organizational standards regarding media contact, conflict resolution, and appropriate guest and customer relations are necessary. Interested applicants must be available any of the seven days of the week. Scheduled hours per week will be a minimum of 40 hours per week. This position will be responsible for overseeing the day to day operations for an assigned mammal and elephant area within the CHS Department. A good driving record and a valid driver license is required.

Representative qualifications include a working knowledge of current animal husbandry techniques; reasonable knowledge of operant conditioning; excellent supervisory skills; communication skills; conflict resolution skills; ability to understand union contracts regarding labor use restrictions; ability to create and monitor budgets and ability to work effectively with others. Some assignments require ability to use power tools and operate heavy equipment. Ability to use word processing and spreadsheet systems desirable. Responsibilities for this position will include but are not limited to staff scheduling, maintenance of timekeeping system through AS400/Kronos, data entry and will serve as department representative in various operational meetings (Operations, Rounds, C&M, Horticulture and Promotional). Experience working with represented labor is desirable. Ability to work outdoors with wild animals in varying weather conditions. Work may involve exposure to zoonotic diseases. Knowledge that would be representative of a bachelors degree and extensive experience as an animal supervisor or manager is highly preferred. Position may require travel. Applicant must be available for work upon needs/request of the department. Attendance at all zoo training meetings is an expectation.

Compensation and benefits

(Exempt with benefits) Salary commensurate with experience.
