Description

The Oregon Zoo has a reputation for leading groundbreaking research, participating in local and global conservation efforts, and exceeding AZA animal welfare standard. The zoo is also deeply committed to sustainability and conservation education. Join the Oregon Zoo as an Animal Keeper in the Marine Life area, where you will oversee all activities relating to the daily care of marine mammals, carnivores, fish and invertebrates of the Oregon Zoo.

As an Animal Keeper, you will:

Assist in developing and updating animal care plans, protocols and procedures.
Participate in animal transports as needed.
Perform SCUBA diving while cleaning and maintaining underwater exhibits; and maintain Dive First Aid certification and DAN O2 provider training.
Develop safe work habits and contribute to the safety of self, co-workers and the animals under your care.
Utilize a record keeping system for animal diets, behavior, training, enrichment and medical.
Report unusual conditions or illnesses in animals to management.
Utilize animal training and conditioning to facilitate participation and cooperation with daily keeper and medical procedures.
Participate in delivering educational presentations to the public.
Participate in zoo-approved research and conservation projects, working closely with research investigators.

Education and Pre-requisites

TO QUALIFY
We will consider any combination of relevant work experience, volunteering, education, and transferable skills as qualifying unless an item or section is labeled required. Please be clear and specific in your application materials on how your background is relevant.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in biology, zoology, or related subjects relevant to the care of zoo animals, AND
Three years professional animal keeper experience; OR
Any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the classification duties and responsibilities.

Required
Valid driver’s license
Open Water I SCUBA certification

Compensation and benefits

COMPENSATION AND REPRESENTATION
Based on the Oregon Pay Equity Act, our internal equity review process and the candidate’s qualifications the appointment will typically be made between $25.14 – $26.73 per hour. The full-salary range for this position is $25.14 – $32.07 per hour.
