Description
Big Bear Alpine Zoo is seeking a dynamic, visionary and experienced leader to join the Big Bear Valley Recreation and Parks Districts team as the Zoo Curator. The Zoo Curator is responsible for the care and management of the animal collection, so must be familiar with best practices in animal welfare, behavior, transport, capture and restraint; wildlife rehabilitation, behavioral enrichment, and exhibit design; federal, state, and regulatory agencies and requirements and record keeping; and conservation, education, interpretation, and marketing efforts. The Zoo Curator is also responsible for managing the facility, including the supervision, direction, and training of approximately 18 staff members and various volunteers, as well as the thriving gift shop and education and conservation programs at the Big Bear Alpine Zoo.
The Big Bear Alpine Zoo is one of only two alpine zoos in the United States. As San Bernardino County’s only zoo, it also supports the County’s wildlife rehabilitation efforts, offering sick, injured or orphaned wild animals a safe haven — temporarily while they heal or permanently if they are unable to survive on their own. Many of the animals brought to us for rehabilitation are successfully released back into their native environment. Those that remain with us on exhibit are either too injured or have been imprinted by humans and cannot be released back into the wild to care for themselves.
The Big Bear Alpine Zoo is home to more than 150 mammals, birds, and reptiles representing more than 85 different species, while operating on a budget of over $2M. The Zoo is open to the public 364 days per year and the Zoo hosts over one hundred thousand visitors annually.
Overview of the Big Bear Alpine Zoo — The zoo is located in the mountains of the San Bernardino National Forest at an elevation of 6900 feet. The Big Bear Valley Recreation and Park District, a Special District of the County of San Bernardino, operates the zoo and facilities. Animal Care, Groundskeepers, Maintenance, Education and Administration staff are all County employees. Working together, the Park District oversees the operation of the zoo, and the Curator oversees the day to day activities of the zoo.
