Description

Canyon Exotic Game Ranch is located in rural north central Texas and maintains over 40 species on-site, with primary focus on exotic hoofstock. This ranch is constantly evolving with the goal of becoming the gold standard in private exotic wildlife management. Animal Care staff are responsible for daily animal husbandry including feeding, cleaning, enclosure maintenance, and daily animal checks and herd counts. Opportunities exist for assisting in maintaining studbooks, providing input on new facility designs, and improving animal husbandry manuals.

Duties
Perform excellent animal care with attention to detail prioritizing animal health and wellbeing and human safety.
Consistently bring ideas and concerns to leadership to continuously improve animal care and welfare standards.
Identify and implement enrichment opportunities for the animals, including logging enrichment outcomes and developing and adhering to an enrichment schedule.
Identify animal training goals and implement training schedules in order to facilitate animal care.
Maintain appropriate daily logs of all aspects of animal care and training.
Oversee and train interns in all aspects of animal care.
Respond to animal emergencies and escapes quickly.
Report animal injuries, illnesses, and abnormal behavior promptly.
Report hazards to staff or animals in a timely manner. Operate safely around animals on a daily basis.
Report maintenance issues promptly to the ranch manager.
Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including animal enclosures, human work areas, and facility vehicles.
Work closely with ranch manger to coordinate ranch projects with the maintenance team.
Meet or exceeds USDA Animal Welfare Act regulations
Adhere to ranch policies.
Must be available for after-hours, weekend, and holiday projects.

Education and Pre-requisites

Bachelor’s degree in relevant Life Sciences (Zoology, Conservation, Biology, Ecology or similar) preferred. Extensive exotic animal care experience may substitute for a degree.
1-3 years’ experience with working with exotic species in a zoo, aquarium, game ranch, sanctuary, or similar facility including experience with behavioral training.
Prefer experience with large mammals, particularly megavertebrates.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to work independently.
Basic Word and Excel skills, experience with Animal Care Software ideal.
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Compensation and benefits

Salary is will be competitive and commensurate with experience. This is a full-time position.
