Description
The Birmingham Zoo is currently seeking a Seasonal Animal Care Professional (ACP) with sea lions in the Predator Department. The primary responsibility of our seasonal team member is hosting our summer sea lion and Predator Zone shows. This position ensures we are presenting to the public an experience that is educational, entertaining, and serves to further the mission of the Birmingham Zoo.
Additionally, this position is an educational opportunity designed to introduce basic animal care for those interested in pursuing a career with sea lions in a zoo environment. The candidate is responsible for assisting in the daily care and maintenance of 1.1 California sea lions in all aspects, including exhibit maintenance, life support system care, enrichment, and water quality testing. Training opportunities are dependent upon individual candidates, as well as sea lion behavior.

Seasonal Position available: 4 months
Education and Pre-requisites
Bachelor’s Degree (or working towards) in an animal related field preferred.
At least 1 year of experience as an intern at a zoological institution (AZA accredited zoo or aquarium preferred).
Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills; have high energy and enthusiasm for completion of tasks; possess team building skills; and has the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Must have ability to foster teamwork within and across teams.
Competency in computer skills.
Must be dependable and demonstrate flexibility in regards to work schedules, including hours, weekends, and holidays.
Must have a current valid driver’s license with no prior traffic violations (within the last five years).
Must be First aid/CPR certified, or be willing to be certified.
Must have current negative TB test and provide documentation, or be willing to have a TB test.
