Description
The Rolling Hills Zoo provides an interesting and rewarding learning opportunity. Interns become actively involved in the zoo’s animal care department learning the natural history of the animals in the area, all aspects of the daily animal husbandry – including cleaning, diet preparation, training and enrichment, behavioral observations and Keeper Talks. Interns will get the opportunity to develop a project of their choice concerning enrichment, educational keeper talks, animal behavior research, training observations, etc. as approved by the supervisor.
Available Areas:
• Carnivore (big cat, bear)
• Reptile (reptiles, amphibian, anteater, aardvark)
• Great ape (chimpanzee, orangutan, mandrill, maned wolf)
• Hoofstock and Ambassador Mammals (domestics, takin, camel, capybara, raptors)
• Large Hoofstock (rhino, giraffe, addax, oryx, kangaroo)
• Small primate and mammal (small primates, painted dog, coati, birds, deer)
Education and Pre-requisites
Must be able to perform the physical challenges involved in the daily experiences of the department including standing for long periods, walking long distances over uneven terrain, lift/carry/push/pull feed/equipment 50+ lbs. Must be able to sit, kneel, stoop, crawl, twist, reach above head, pull, bend, and climb stairs and ladders. Candidate must be able and willing to perform all above duties outdoors and in all weather conditions including extreme heat and cold.
Compensation and benefits
This is a non-paid internship. There are four sections of the internship: Winter (December-February), Spring (March-May), Summer (June-August) and Fall (September-November). When sending your resume and cover-letter please specify which session(s) you are applying for. Start and end times are flexible with a minimum lasting 10 weeks.
The purpose of the placements is to help the intern gain experience related to their education. The Rolling Hills Zoo will work with students to document necessary time or projects needed to gain university credit for the internship. We cannot provide transportation, housing, or a stipend. Position limited to US nationals.
Candidates selected for internship must pass background check and provide proof of negative TB test.
