Description
Utah’s Hogle Zoo is announcing the immediate opening of a full-time benefited position as Keeper-Rocky Shores with emphasis on the otter, eagle and aquarium section of the area.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Rocky Shores exhibit includes four acres with five large exhibits featuring Grizzly and Polar Bears, Seals and Sea Lions, Bald Eagles, North American River Otters, and salt water aquaria. Keeper – Rocky Shores is responsible for the care and husbandry of these animals, as well as other animals or areas as assigned.
Applicants must be able to work effectively in a positive team environment, equally with guests, staff and volunteers. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary in this position. At least two years paid experience working with salt water aquaria in a zoo or aquarium setting is required. There is a strong expectation of experience in operant conditioning and training techniques, providing enrichment, and public speaking.
Education and Pre-requisites
Degree in life sciences, biology, zoology or related field is preferred. The Keeper – Rocky Shores will also be trained to work in other animal areas of the Zoo. Applicant must be able to work under diverse and variable weather conditions, in close proximity to visitors, be able to lift over 60 pounds without injury, bend, stoop, jump, and stretch; must have, or be able to obtain, an Advanced Open Water dive certification; and, an excellent driving record is required.
Compensation and benefits
Position includes an excellent benefits package, including medical, dental, and retirement plans as well as paid vacation and holiday time. Salary is commensurate with experience.
