Description
The Gulf Breeze Zoo is a 50-acre facility located in the beautiful Florida panhandle. The Zoo is rapidly growing and in search of a motivated individual to join our animal care team. Gulf Breeze maintains a diverse collection of over 900 animals including great apes, carnivores, rhinos, hippos, small primates, birds, and reptiles and a large petting animal area.
The Gulf Breeze Zoo is currently seeking an energetic and hardworking individual who shares a passion for animal care. The primate keeper is responsible for the care of various primate and some non-primate species including, but not limited to, white-handed gibbon, siamang, tamarins, ring-tailed lemurs, binturong, and black and white ruffed lemurs.
Job responsibilities include but are not limited to providing proper animal care through:
• Daily cleaning and maintenance of exhibits in accordance with all Standard Operating Procedures and safety guidelines.
• Diet preparation and feeding, health observations, and breeding observations.
• Training exotic animals through positive reinforcement to maintain and establish consistent behaviors for routine health checks.
• Assist in vet and medical procedures as needed and as instructed by vet or management.
• Daily observation of animals and detailed recordkeeping.
• Administer proper enrichment to animals within designated department.
• Use of machinery, power tools, and lawn equipment in a safe manner.
• Ability to communicate with guests and conduct keeper talks to guests through formal and informal encounters.
Education and Pre-requisites
A bachelor’s degree in an animal relevant field is strongly desired, but suitable industry experience may be substituted for a degree. At least one-year previous experience with primates, feeding, care, and exhibit cleaning is desired. Veterinary technician certification is a plus.
The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated, detail-oriented, and flexible individual that can work harmoniously with lots of different people in various situations.
All applicants must be physically fit with the ability to lift 50 pounds comfortably and be able to work in all types of weather. Applicants must possess a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn, and excellent communication skills. Ability to follow personal dress code and maintain a valid driver’s license is required.
