Description
Mill Mountain Zoo is located on top of Mill Mountain in Roanoke, VA. Our collection includes a variety of species of herps, birds, and mammals. We are seeking a qualified candidate to fill a part-time animal keeper position. The right candidate will enjoy working in a team environment and have a flexible schedule.
Qualifications:
• Physical
o Must be able to lift 50lbs and to bend, lift, rake and sweep.
o Work in adverse weather and able to traverse the zoo on foot.
o Must possess sufficient visual acuity appropriate for animal care and safety.
o Must be able to safely operate a motorized vehicle
Responsibilities:
• Animal Husbandry
o Monitor health and behavior
o Inspect, observe and feed animals under care.
o Responsibility for daily records and reporting.
o Assist with animal medical procedures.
o Assist with Behavior Husbandry.
• Facility Maintenance
o Responsible for cleaning and maintaining enclosures.
o Detect and remedy containment issues.
o Make minor repairs as needed.
• Education and guest interaction
o Responsible for conducting informative and entertaining Keeper Chats, as well as informal interaction with guests.
o Conduct behind the scenes tours when requested.
• Other
o Detect and report safety issues.
o Additional duties as assigned.
Education and Pre-requisites
o An Associates or Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
o Must have a strong interest/experience in animal care.
o Must possess, or be able to obtain in a reasonable time, a valid VA Driver’s license
o Must possess a basic animal knowledge.
o Must demonstrate effective written/verbal communication skills.
o Must have a strong work ethic/history and an excellent safety record.
o Minor repair skills are a plus.
