Description

Utah’s Hogle Zoo has an exciting opportunity for a seasonal Veterinary Technician. This position will assist the
Veterinarians in a variety of technical duties unique to the position of Veterinary Technician. This position is supervised by the Director of Animal Health.

Preference will be given to candidates with scholastic degrees in animal care and/or veterinary technology beyond the high school level. The ability to work with a variety of animals in a safe and calm manner is a plus. Good typing and computer skills as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.

The position is a flexible position meaning that a set schedule may not be possible. The ability to work weekends and holidays will be the hallmark of the successful candidate. Further details are as follows:
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Must be able to safely restrain a variety of animal species including, but not limited to, reptiles, birds, and small mammals
• Responsible for the collection, logging, processing and tracking of biological samples such as blood, urine and feces
• Be proficient at the proper set-up for all medical and surgical procedures
• Be proficient at maintaining a clean, and when appropriate, sanitized work area
• Must be able to perform all in-house laboratory procedures including manual CBC, chemistries, fecal centrifugation and cytology as examples
• Required to accurately prepare, dispense, and administer medications
• Must provide appropriate care for quarantine, holding, and hospitalized animals
• Must be able to communicate accurately and effectively with Animal Care staff and foster a good relationship in order to facilitate compliance and understanding by the staff with regards to animal health
• Must comply with USDA, AZA, and Hogle Zoo guidelines and regulations
• Other duties as assigned

Education and Pre-requisites

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Minimum of 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED. Preference will be given to candidates with further education in the animal care field
• Proof of negative TB status within 90 days before the first day of employment
• Maintain a valid Utah Driver’s License
• Background in animal care or veterinary technology
• Data Entry and computer proficiency is required (ZIMS, Microsoft Office programs)
• Must be able to work at a microscope for extended periods
• Must be able to take direction and learn the skills specific to this position at a level of competency that allows the doctors to accurately diagnosis, treat, and/or prevent health conditions
• Must be able to work under diverse and variable weather conditions, with possible allergens; be able to lift over 60 pounds without injury, bend, stoop, jump, stretch and generally move quickly to avoid dangerous situations.

Compensation and benefits

This is a flexible Part-time non-benefit eligible position and is restricted to 1500 hours per annum without guarantee of renewal.
