Description
This Internship program is designed to introduce college students and graduates seeking theoretical as well as hands on experience in the many facets of the Zoo World. Participants are exposed to a broad range of fields inherent in Zoo operations such as administration, public relations, development, medicine, animal husbandry, education, and many others.
Responsibilities
Duties
include but not limited to general animal husbandry including feeding, habitat cleaning, enrichment activities, diet preparation, general housekeeping and support work of keeping staff. 50% of time is spent in education with direct visitor interactions. Often
involves physical labor in sometimes inclement weather with some heavy lifting and standing for long periods of time.
Requirements
Must be at least 18 years of age, pass TB and Tetanus,
become a member of Zoological Society of Washington and make a small monetary
contribution towards uniform and educational materials. Must be available to work at least two eight-hour shifts per week with a three [3] month time commitment.
Compensation
This internship is unpaid, however we participate in most college credit programs and track hours accordingly. Upon satisfactory completion of the program a certificate and letter of recommendation will be issued.
