Lead Keeper Large Mammals

Description

Bearizona Wildlife Park LLC is looking for an adventurous individual to manage a North American mammal collection that consists of black bear, wolves, bison, big horn sheep, dall sheep, and mountain goats.  Additional mammals will be added to the collection over time.

Responsibilities

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Participate in handling and restraint procedures that involve lasso, net, chemical immobilization and squeeze chutes.
  • Identify individual animals using microchips, tattoos and ear tags.
  • Monitor animal health and initiate diagnostic tests and treatment when required.
  • Prepare and feed diets.
  • Provide leadership to keeper staff.
    Work with keeper and educational staff to develop new programs.
  • Maintain accurate health records of collection animals.
  • Work with other keepers to develop nutrition and enrichment plans.
  • Monitor and maintain animal exhibits.
  • Wear Bearizona uniform and adhere to dress code, drug, alcohol, and tobacco policy.
  • Assume additional duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Work with CEO and COO to maintain federal and state animal care requirements.

 

Work Hours and Schedules

Work hours and schedule is based on a 40 hour work week, but may vary depending on emergencies.  Weekends and some holidays are required workdays.

Requirements

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Expert marksman abilities with rifle and shotgun.
  • Ability to handle complex and/or emotional situations.
  • Capable of multi-tasking and prioritizing.
  • Capable of performing professional duties in a field situation; in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Excellent time management.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Must be comfortable performing keeper duties in both open and closed contact environments.
  • Must be able to lift up to fifty (50) pounds using proper ergonomic techniques without assistance repetitively.
  • Must be able to lift up to one-hundred (100) pounds using proper ergonomic techniques without assistance as needed.
  • Must be able to perform repetitive bending and repetitive arm motions.
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license and current automobile insurance coverage.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in agriculture or natural sciences or an Associate’s degree related to zoo keeping.
  • Two [2] years experience caring for large exotic animals.
  • Must be experienced in chemical immobilization and animal restraint.

Compensation

FLSA: Regular Full Time – $36,000 - $38,000 per year, DOEQ  Eligible for vacation and health benefits.
